COOPERS & LYBRAND APPOINTS SAMUEL A. DIPIAZZA JR. MANAGING PARTNER FOR CHICAGO CLIENT SERVICE CLUSTER

NEW YORK, Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of the firm's new strategic direction, Coopers & Lybrand Chairman Eugene M. Freedman today announced the appointment of Samuel A. DiPiazza, Jr. as managing partner for the Chicago Client Service Cluster.
DiPiazza, formerly managing partner of the Chicago office, will now lead the firm's operations and service to clients through offices in five cities: Chicago, Rockford and Aurora, Ill.; Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and South Bend, Indiana.
"Sam's extensive experience and talent as a client service leader give him the attributes required to play a central role in achieving our goals. Through his outstanding leadership, he will manage a talented team that will drive the growth of our firm in this important midwestern office cluster," said Freedman.
The firm's new strategy ensures clients will receive the most responsive and efficient professional services available in today's competitive marketplace, Freedman explained. By linking offices into client service clusters, the firm has adopted a unique approach that promotes teamwork in serving clients in key business markets nationwide.
With more than 19 years of experience in serving large and small companies in a wide array of industries, DiPiazza brings a vital blend of professional expertise and leadership skill to his new role. As a member of Coopers & Lybrand's strategic planning committee, DiPiazza played a major part in crafting the firm's innovative service approach.
Prior to serving as managing partner of the Chicago office, DiPiazza was managing partner of the firm's Birmingham, Ala. office. The youngest professional ever admitted to the partnership, he is also a member of the Coopers & Lybrand Firm Council, the firm's governing body.
DiPiazza holds a bachelor of science degrees in accounting and economics from the University of Alabama, where he graduated summa cum laude. He also received a master of science degree in tax accounting, summa cum laude, from the University of Houston.
Active in his community, DiPiazza is a member of the boards of the Hubbard Street Dance Company, the Red Cross, and the Mayor's Fellows Programs. He is also a member of the board of the Girl Scouts of Chicago. From 1987 to 1991, he was chairman of the Alabama Ballet and in 1991, chairman of the board of directors for Discovery 2000, a children's museum.
In the recently announced new strategic direction, Freedman stressed that a strong client focus combined with an organization to ensure excellent service at all levels will drive the firm into the next century.
Coopers & Lybrand's strategy for the future differentiates the firm from its competitors by emphasizing the central importance of client service as the basis for growth. In addition to 16 client service clusters, the strategy focuses on five core businesses (Business Assurance, Human Resource Consulting, Performance Improvement, Process Management and Tax) and seven core competencies (Business Processes, Quantitative Analysis, Human Resource Development, International, Learning and Strategy, Relationship Management, and Technology).
