The Foothill Division recorded 450 total violent crimes this year, compared with 383 in the same period last year, a 15 percent drop.

``Most homicides and violent crimes are gang related,'' Hahn said. ``If we can get a handle on gang-related crime, we've solved most of our crime problem on our way to being the safest big city in America.''

Lt. Tom Zak, who heads the Foothill Gang Impact Team, said officers are ``bringing all resources to bear on a problem that's been plaguing our city for too long.''

Councilman Alex Padilla Alex Padilla is a politician in California. He was elected as the State Senator for the 20th District of California in November 2006 and was inaugurated in early December. In order to enter the Senate he had to resign as Councilman for the 7th District on the Los Angeles City  praised the work of the officers, but he acknowledged more needs to be done.

``You're doing a tremendous, tremendous job,'' Padilla said.
