SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  -- Aiming to help residents get relief after the sixth straight day of triple-digit temperatures, county officials have opened the doors to a cooling center A cooling center is a temporary air-conditioned public space set up by local authorities to deal with the health effects of a heat wave. Usually sited at several locations throughout a city, cooling centers are meant to prevent hyperthermia, especially among the elderly without air  in Newhall Newhall may refer to:

The Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  Service Center will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and director Lupe Lopez said guests in need of some heat relief are welcome to "stay as long as they need to."

The Service Center, in the heart of the older and lower-income east Newhall area, usually opens as a cooling station every summer and a warming station each winter.

"With everything going up in price -- gas, food, rents -- turning off the air-conditioning is an easier sacrifice for people," Lopez said.

Mother Nature is also expected to provide some relief today, with highs peaking at 95 degrees, the first double-digit highs since Saturday.
