MORE ITALIAN FARE FROM GIADA

If you're a Giada De Laurentiis Giada Pamela De Laurentiis (IPA: ['dʒaːda 'de lau'reːntis]) (born August 22, 1970) is an Italian-American chef, writer, TV Personality, and the current of the Food Network programs Everyday Italian,  fan, you'll want to get a copy of her latest cookbook, "Everyday Pasta" (Clarkson Potter; $32.50). Filled with more than 100 personal favorites and sprinkled with lots of beautiful color photos (many of her), the enthusiastic, popular Food Network star includes innovative takes and twists on main dishes, salads, soups and sides. Ideas are included for quick weeknight week·night

Among the irresistible-sounding creations are Wagon Wheels With Artichoke artichoke, name for two different plants of the family Asteraceae (aster family), both having edible parts. The French, or globe, artichoke (Cynara scolymus  Pesto, Cheesy cheesy (che´ze) caseous.  Baked Tortellini, Crab and Ricotta ri·cot·ta

NEW IN THE SNACK AISLE

Popchips are all-natural potato, corn and rice chips popped under heat and pressure, resulting in crisp-textured snacks. Flavor choices range from Salsa Corn Chips and Wasabi Rice Chips to Parmesan Garlic Potato Chips, Cheddar Corn Chips and more. Our favorite was the Barbecue Potato Chips followed by the Salsa Corn Chips. Some flavors were too salty (Sea Salt Corn Chips and Original Potato Chips) or had a slightly artificial or overpowering taste, while others were reminiscent of rice cakes. Each serving (17 to 23 chips) has 120 calories and 4 to 5 grams total fat (no trans fat). Look for the 3.25- to 4-ounce bags (listed at $2.99) at Bristol Farms, Vons and Pavilions. Also online at www.popchips.com.

LIGHT ICE CREAM

Haagen-Dazs Mocha Mocha (mō`kə), town (1990 est. pop. 2,000), S Yemen, a port on the Red Sea. It was noted for the export of the coffee to which it gave its name but declined as a trading port in the late 19th cent. with the rise of Hodeida and Aden.  Chip Extra Rich Light ice cream is terrific tasting, and, even better, a 1/2-cup serving has only 220 calories and eight grams fat. It's one of the three new flavors added to the company's light line. Also new and available in pints are Rocky Road (240 calories and 7 grams fat per 1/2-cup serving) and Pineapple Coconut (210 calories and 4 1/2 grams fat per 1/2-cup serving). Suggested retail is $3.69 per 16-ounce container. www.haagen-dazs.com.

WINE WINNERS

Wine snobs may be stunned, but Charles Shaw 2005 California Chardonnay (made by Bronco bronco: see mustang.  Wine Co., known as Two Buck Chuck and sold for $1.99 at Trader Joe's stores) was judged the best California chardonnay (competing against 350 other chardonnays) in the recent 2007 California State Fair Commercial Wine Competition. "I was not surprised this wine won," said G.M. "Pooch" Pucilowski, Sacramento-based wine educator, chief judge and director of the competition. Second place went to Wente Brothers 2005 Chardonnay Arroyo Seco Monterey Riva Ranch Vineyard ($17.99). An affordable Five Rivers Winery 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles Robles is a common surname in the Spanish language meaning oaks, and may refer to:
  • Alfonso García Robles (1911-1991), Mexican diplomat and politician
  • Aurora Robles (born 1980), Mexican fashion model
  • Charlie Robles (born 1943), Puerto Rican musician
($9.99) won the top prize in the cabernet sauvignon category (beating out 397 others).

LATEST TOPPING SCOOP

Just in time to dress up ice-cream sundaes and other creations, the J.M. Smucker Co. has added Dark Chocolate With Mint Topping and Sugar Free Strawberry Topping (sweetened with Splenda and containing 25 calories per serving) to its lineup. Available in 11.75-ounce and 10-ounce jars, respectively, suggested retail is $1.99 to $2.49. Go to www.smuckers.com for more flavor information and recipes.

DECADENT CUPCAKES

Vanilla Bake Shop opened last week in Santa Monica with some 11 different cupcake flavors. They come in regular and baby sizes and are offered daily; among them dark bourbon chocolate filled with vanilla bean whipped cream, lemon raspberry, mocha chocolate and key lime. Cupcake babies are three for $5; regular size $3.25 each. Stop by and indulge at 512 Wilshire Boulevard, Santa Monica (310) 458-6644; www. vanillabakeshop.com. Also new is Dainties Cupcakes. Just one flavor is offered on weekdays -- devil's food cupcakes filled with 15 different flavors of whipped cream -- among them raspberry, peanut butter, coconut, caramel and tiramisu tir·a·mi·su

DRIED PLUMS GO SINGLE

To appeal to the snack market, Sunsweet Ones is a product that offers 20 individually wrapped dried plums (prunes) packaged in a 7-ounce container with a suggested retail of $2.99. The amount of packaging involved in this product seems wasteful, but the concept is handy if you want to tote prunes, which are surprisingly appealing in this format. A better choice might have been to package one serving (100 calories) -- four prunes -- per packet.
