, said highs in the Valley today are expected to range from the upper 90s to a blistering 105 degrees. Saturday through Thursday, temperatures will be only slightly cooler, with highs in the mid-90s to 102.

``It's kind of payback time,'' Seto said. ``It should be close to record temperatures in some areas.''

The NWS is forecasting temperatures to peak at 102 at its Santa Clarita monitoring station during the next week. Weather along coastal areas is expected to remain seasonal.

``Basically what we have is a high pressure over Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  and a block of the sea breeze that comes in and cools things off,'' he said of the heat wave. ``It's not a Santa Ana because the winds aren't strong enough, but it's the same type of weather pattern.''

The hot temperatures will be accompanied by moderate to unhealthy air conditions.
