COOK WINS UTLA VEEP POSITION.

After an eight-month crusade against alleged UTLA UTLA United Teachers of Los Angeles (California)  election improprieties, Monroe High School For other uses, see James Monroe High School.

 teacher Gregg Solkovits lost the race Friday to win a key leadership post in the union.

Solkovits lost by 33 votes to Bev Cook for the vice president's seat representing the American Federation of Teachers American Federation of Teachers (AFT), an affiliate of the AFL-CIO. It was formed (1916) out of the belief that the organizing of teachers should follow the model of a labor union, rather than that of a professional association.  on the United Teachers Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  executive board.

Conducted by mail-in ballot, the election was the fifth held for the seat. Previous elections were invalidated in·val·i·date

 because of counting of unsigned ballots and improper distribution of fliers. A total of 2,062 UTLA members cast their votes, with 50.6 percent voting for Cook, or 1,336 votes.

Solkovits, who also lost the previous elections by narrow margins, ran on a reform platform, charging that the union is out of touch with its membership.

UTLA President John Perez said the results vindicated his assertion that the membership is, in fact, satisfied with his leadership.

Solkovits said it was difficult for him to reach voters because the membership list provided by the union had numerous outdated phone numbers. He said he will continue to be involved in the union.
