Solkovits lost by 33 votes to Bev Cook for the vice president's seat representing the American Federation of Teachers American Federation of Teachers (AFT), an affiliate of the AFL-CIO. Conducted by mail-in ballot, the election was the fifth held for the seat. A total of 2,062 UTLA members cast their votes, with 50.6 percent voting for Cook, or 1,336 votes. Solkovits, who also lost the previous elections by narrow margins, ran on a reform platform, charging that the union is out of touch with its membership. UTLA President John Perez said the results vindicated his assertion that the membership is, in fact, satisfied with his leadership. Solkovits said it was difficult for him to reach voters because the membership list provided by the union had numerous outdated phone numbers. He said he will continue to be involved in the union.
