For a flavor punch, add cooked pieces of hot Italian sausage ITALIAN MEAT SAUCE (Shared by Vivian Bowers, Northridge) 1/2 cup onion slices 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 pound lean ground beef 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 (1-pound) cans diced tomatoes 2 (8-ounce) cans seasoned tomato sauce 1 (3-ounce) can broiled broil 1 v. broiled, broil·ing, broils v.tr. 1. THE-SPIRIT'S-IN-IT SPAGHETTI WITH MEATY TOMATO SAUCE (Shared by Ruth Nebron, Valley Glen) 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 pound ground turkey (not ground turkey breast) 1 pound Italian-style turkey sausage, casings removed and cut into 1-inch chunks 1 large onion, chopped 3 garlic cloves, minced 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes 2 (6-ounce) cans tomato paste 2 1/2 cups water 3 tablespoons chopped fresh basil OR 2 teaspoons dried basil 2 tablespoons chopped fresh oregano OR 2 teaspoons dried oregano 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes Salt 1 pound spaghetti, cooked and drained Freshly grated Parmesan OR Romano cheese In a Dutch oven, heat oil over medium-high heat. Add ground turkey and turkey sausage. Cook, breaking turkey up well with a spoon, until it loses its raw look, about 10 minutes. Add onion and garlic and cook until onion softens, about 5 minutes. Stir in tomatoes, tomato paste, water, basil, oregano and red pepper flakes. (If using fresh herbs, stir in during last 10 minutes of cooking.) Bring to a simmer. Reduce heat to medium-low. Cook, uncovered, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened thick·en tr. & intr.v. thick·ened, thick·en·ing, thick·ens 1. To make or become thick or thicker: Thicken the sauce with cornstarch.
