 said.

Karcher was convicted of first-degree murder for a 1993 slaying in Orange County and received a life sentence, prison officials said.

The special-circumstance allegation that makes him eligible for life without parole or the death penalty in the prison slaying is that he was previously convicted of first-degree murder, Campbell said.

No arraignment A criminal proceeding at which the defendant is officially called before a court of competent jurisdiction, informed of the offense charged in the complaint, information, indictment, or other charging document, and asked to enter a plea of guilty, not guilty, or as otherwise permitted  date has been set. Karcher has been moved to a segregation unit at California State Prison-Los Angeles County, prison officials said.

Karcher came to the Lancaster prison in September 2005, prison spokesman Lt. Ken Lewis said.

Manning was convicted of burglary and began serving his sentence at the Lancaster prison in February 2005. He was scheduled to be released in December 2033, Lewis said.

Lewis said an unidentified inmate yelled out that a "man was down" about 1:20 p.m. March 7. Responding prison staff found Manning lying on the cell floor, Lewis said.

Manning's death was the third prison homicide in 2006. Two occurred last year, but no charges have been filed in those cases.

Robert Painter, 59, was found beaten to death in his cell in the "special needs" section of the prison set aside for inmates who might be in danger from other prisoners.

Painter's cellmate, Michael Andrews, 41, who is serving a sentence of 25 years to life as a "three strikes, you're out three strikes, you're out n. recent (beginning 1994) legislation enacted in several states (and proposed in many others, as well as possible Federal law) which makes life-terms (or extremely long terms without parole) mandatory for criminals who have been convicted " repeat offender, was the only other person in the cell. Andrews has been placed in administrative segregation.

On Jan. 24, convicted murderer Richard Ponton, 36, was found in his cell with his throat cut, his body wrapped in a sheet under his bed. He lived in the same "special needs" section.

Cellmate Christopher Bass, a 32-year-old convicted robber and child molester from Ventura County serving a 60-year sentence, was placed in administration segregation as a suspect in Ponton's slaying. Prison officials said they did not know whether Bass was in the cell when Ponton was found.

Ponton was serving a life sentence without possibility of parole for murder in a Los Angeles County conviction.
