CONVEX COMPUTER ADDS NEW ENTRY-LEVEL SUPERCOMPUTER TO ITS C3400 FAMILY
RICHARDSON, Texas, Nov. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Convex Computer Corporation (NYSE: CNX) announced today that it has expanded its departmental C3400 supercomputer family to include a new entry-level system, the C3400-ES.
The C3400-ES is the company's most compact supercomputer, using only 40 percent of the floor space that a standard C3400 system would occupy. All CPUs, memory and peripherals are contained in a single, 19-inch, standard RETMA rack cabinet.
"This single-rack system is a superior choice when affordable, air- cooled supercomputing performance is needed in a deployable system," said James A. Balthazar, Convex's vice president of marketing. "The system's compact size makes it suitable for any environment, including ships, submarines, trucks, planes and analog-to-digital data collection centers."
Pricing on the C3400-ES starts at $295,000. The C3400-ES system, which is available immediately, operates on 220V single phase power and can be configured with either one or two processors, up to 512 megabytes of memory, and four gigabytes of virtual memory.
The C3400-ES is available in either bundled or unbundled configurations. In addition to CPUs and memory, the bundled C3400-ES configuration includes disk and tape subsystems, network connections and system and compiler software.
"Because the C3400-ES is a multi-user, multiprocessing system, it is a highly cost-effective supercomputer solution for work groups or departmental users," said Balthazar. "The C3400-ES works well as a server in a multiple system environment, providing compute service, visualization and file management."
Offering up to 200 MFLOPS of peak performance, the C3400-ES contains both custom Bipolar Complementary Metal Oxide Silicon (BiCMOS) gate arrays and gallium arsenide (GaAs) circuitry. Convex's high-end C3800 supercomputer family is fully implemented with GaAs technology and Convex is the first computer manufacturer in the world to ship GaAs supercomputers. The C3400-ES is fully compatible with other C3 Series supercomputers.
Convex Computer Corporation, a leading supplier of air-cooled supercomputers worldwide, markets its products primarily to scientific, engineering and technical users throughout the world for a wide variety of applications in such areas as seismic processing, reservoir simulation, computational chemistry, computer-aided engineering, image processing, aerospace simulations and molecular biology. Convex has sold nearly 950 systems to more than 530 customers in 40 countries. The systems are sold and serviced through direct sales and an extensive distribution network.
