Instant messaging is more interactive than e-mail because messages are sent immediately, whereas e-mail messages can be queued up in a mail server for seconds or  chats over the Internet, Christopher Rajlal, 52, would take the conversation in more lurid directions, according to the affidavit.

Now, Rajlal faces a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison if convicted of using the Internet to arrange for sex with a minor, Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott Garringer said Thursday.

The male FBI agent that Rajlal was in contact with presented himself in July in an America Online See AOL.  chat room as a 13-year-old girl who liked softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  and skating, according to the affidavit.

Rajlal described himself to the ``girl'' as a 40-year-old resident of Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. In a later online conversation, Rajlal would send the ``girl'' nude and explicit pictures of a female he said was 15, according to the affidavit. In addition to a charge of trying to arrange for sex over the Internet with a minor, Rajlal has also been charged with distribution of child pornography Child pornography is the visual representation of minors under the age of 18 engaged in sexual activity or the visual representation of minors engaging in lewd or erotic behavior designed to arouse the viewer's sexual interest.  and possession of child pornography.

An attorney for Rajlal could not be reached for comment. Reached by phone at his home, Rajlal said he was unaware of the indictment and declined to comment.

The affidavit quotes Rajlal as proposing Sept. 26 that they meet at a motel, and asking in an online conversation the next day if the ``girl'' would leave her house that night to meet him. In the Sept. 27 conversation, Rajlal told the ``girl'' he wanted to have sex with her, according to the affidavit. At one point in their conversations, Rajlal seemed to hesitate because his would-be partner was ``so young and innocent,'' he typed.

Rajlal was indicted INDICTED, practice. When a man is accused by a bill of indictment preferred by a grand jury, he is said to be indicted.  Wednesday.
