 picked up City Controller Rick Tuttle's support Tuesday Tuesday: see week.  in her bid to succeed him next year as the first woman elected to citywide office in Los Angeles.

``This job needs someone who can stand up to powerful forces, and Laura Chick is that person,'' Tuttle said, adding she is familiar with the broadened powers of the office under the new City Charter because of her role in overseeing the charter's implementation.

So far, only former City Treasurer Paul Brownridge has announced plans to challenge Chick for the office.

Chick and Tuttle, who has been controller for 15 years, are being forced out of their current offices by term limits.

Chick said she believes the controller can have great influence on city operations by finding savings through audits.

``Even a 1 percent savings in the budget could result in a savings of $44 million this year,'' Chick said. ``That's money we can use to fund programs the city desperately needs.''

Among such needs are paving streets, removing graffiti graffiti
