Siptu chief Jack O'Connor also called on the Taoiseach to "exercise some control" over his Finance Minister Brian Lenihan before he does "irreparable damage to the country". Mr O'Connor described the proposed reduction of 17,500 public service jobs as "a tall order". He said: "We can accept numbers have to be reduced not because we have a bloated public service but because we can't pay for it." But he refused to say how many public sector jobs could be cut.
