CONTROL DATA SYSTEMS ANNOUNCES A COMPREHENSIVE SOLUTION FOR COMPANIES WITH INCOMPATIBLE ELECTRONIC MAIL SYSTEMS (d)

ARDEN HILLS, Minn., June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Control Data Systems (NASDAQ: CDAT) today announced an expanded set of products and professional services to support its E-mail integration products. A "backbone" or infrastructure designed to integrate all of a company's existing E-mail systems and directories into a single information sharing system, Mail-Hub(a) has now been enhanced by the addition of several new integration services as well as PC local area network (LAN) gateways to popular E-mail systems such as cc:Mail(TM), Microsoft Mail(TM), Lotus Notes(TM), WordPerfect Office(TM), MHS Mail(TM) and more.
"Control Data now provides a broad range of systems integration services that we use to assist our customers in evaluating their electronic mail needs and assessing their technology options," said Jim Payne, marketing manager for Control Data Systems' Network Integration, in making the announcement. "We work with customers to configure, test and monitor a cost-effective electronic mail infrastructure for their organization."
Control Data's enhanced E-mail solution gives users the capability to share a centralized X.500 directory which lets users look up anyone in their network and send mail to users on almost any E-mail system, anywhere in the world. Control Data's Integration Services help organizations synchronize their local directories with the Mail-Hub X.500 directory, so that users can be added locally and published globally without additional administrator effort. Control Data will also assist with the transfer of a company's existing database information into the X.500 database.
"This is one of the first commercially-available electronic mail integration suites to use the industry-standard X.500 directory system as an integral part of its backbone," continued Payne. "A standards- based solution from Control Data will not only maximize the value of yesterday and today's investments, but it will also provide a solid foundation for the future growth of electronic mail in any organization."
Mail-Hub is currently being used to connect more than 100,000 users at the University of Minnesota who are using six different E-mail packages running on desktop, departmental and mainframe computers -- including LAN-based PCs and UNIX-based systems. They continue to use their E-mail systems of choice, but are now able to communicate with people in other departments that may be using entirely different mail systems.
Control Data's suite of Mail-Hub products is based on open systems technology and supports all major electronic mail exchange standards and protocols, such as the international X.400 E-mail interchange standard. As a result, Control Data can mix and match products from different vendors into a comprehensive E-mail solution.
Prices for Control Data's E-mail integration products and services are based on the number of users in an organization and the type of services they need. A basic Mail-Hub "backbone", which includes X.400, SMTP, X.500 and directory synchronization, plus two PC gateways ranges from $18,000 to $45,000 in the United States.
Additional services range in cost from $2,000, in the United States, for the installation of an additional PC gateway to $20,000, in the U.S., for a complex needs analysis at a 50,000+ user installation.
