(Contreras) was an all-city linebacker in 1991, and he talked to me about how important the streak is,'' David Contreras said. ``Everything I was doing tonight was for him, for the team, the coach and the alumni.''

``Everything'' included scoring runs of 9, 12 and 2 yards, complementing a near-perfect 10-of-11 night for Valdez. The Sylmar QB finished with 157 yards as well as a pair of 2-yard TD sneaks.

``John is really starting to blossom,'' Sylmar coach Jeff Engilman said. ``He doesn't miss often, does he? He'd have been perfect if the guy hadn't dropped the damn ball.''

The efforts of Contreras and Valdez countered an impressive Monroe (0-1, 5-1) performance by Tyrone Burwell. The Vikings tailback had 19 carries for 156 yards and a touchdown, as well as catching a pair of passes - including a 4-yard TD pass from Steve Beltran.

Monroe cut the deficit to 28-20 on Deandre Phillips' 8-yard TD run just 7 seconds before halftime. But Sylmar accounted for the next 20 points, getting TDs from Valdez (2-yard run), Mark Sutton (15-yard run; four carries for 59 yards on the night) and Clifford Johnson (9-yard reverse).
