CONTRACTOR VOWS TO CURE POLICE-CAR COMPUTER ILLS.

Byline: Dan Laidman Staff Writer

An extension of a $15 million contract for troublesome computer systems in police cars won a City Council panel's endorsement Monday after company officials offered assurances the problems will be solved.

The Public Safety Committee unanimously approved the changes to a contract with Northrop Grumman Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) is an aerospace and defense conglomerate that is the result of the 1994 purchase of Grumman by Northrop. The company is the third largest defense contractor for the U.S. , whose officials say software glitches, which have interrupted the city's major overhaul of emergency communications, are being confronted.

``The corporation is fully committed (Law) committed to prison for trial, in distinction from being detained for examination.

More than $13.5 million has been spent on the system, which does not work, police officials said.

To resolve the problems, Northrop has shuffled some staffers and will be using its own products for the mobile data terminals rather than products of a vendor, Poldy said.

The upgrade is part of the $284 million emergency command control communications In telecommunication, control communications is the branch of technology devoted to the design, development, and application of communications facilities used specifically for control purposes, such as for controlling (a) industrial processes, (b) movement of resources, (c)  system overhaul, funded by a bond issue that voters approved as Proposition M in 1992.

The panelists addressed the matter in closed session and said they want regular updates.

``This item will be before us regularly and often,'' said Councilman Jack Weiss, chairman of the committee.

The Public Safety Committee also heard an update on a review to determine whether the LAPD 1. LAPD - Link Access Procedure on the D channel.

Michael Cherkasky, who monitors the LAPD's compliance with the consent decree on behalf of a federal judge, said placing cameras in all patrol cars might be a way to ensure that racial and ethnic minorities are treated equitably. The judge will decide next summer whether to extend the monitoring.

The Public Safety Committee will hold a hearing Jan. 9 on the feasibility of putting video cameras in patrol cars.
