Eastside Union School District awarded a $9.3 million contract for the construction of Cole Middle School's long-awaited new campus.

During a special meeting Wednesday morning, the board voted 5-0 to award a construction contract to Skidmore Contracting for the new school on 20 acres at 30th Street East and Avenue I.

``It's really exciting. It's sort of like a dream come true,'' superintendent Connie Webb said after the meeting. ``It's been years that the Eastside community has longed for a real middle school. It is very important to all of us here and truly an exciting project for us.''

Earth-moving equipment will finish grading land for the new campus in mid-June, followed by the start of construction. Webb said construction should be completed one year from the starting date.

The builder has a good reputation, she said.

``From the information I've got we had good reports from the people that have worked with him,'' Webb said. ``He has built in the Antelope Valley before. It seems like he is good and will keep us on track. And it's a good price for us.''

Half the price for the new school will be paid by the state, and half by the district. The district's share will come from a bond issue approved by Eastside voters in November 1997.

District officials staged a groundbreaking ceremony last June for the school that they hoped would have opened near the end of 1999. However, Webb said construction was delayed while awaiting approval from the state, county and city governments.

Changing locations with the middle school will be the Eastside district office, which is located next to the current Cole campus on Avenue H at 70th Street East.
