CONTRACT AWARDED FOR PORT'S PIER 400.

The Port of Los Angeles The Port of Los Angeles is located on San Pedro Bay in the San Pedro neighborhood of Los Angeles, approximately 20 miles (30 km) south of downtown. Also called Los Angeles Harbor and WORLDPORT LA  took a giant step forward Friday in the development of its newest and by far largest container terminal A container terminal is a facility where cargo containers are transhipped between different transport vehicles, for onward transportation. The transhipment may be between ships and land vehicles, for example trains or trucks, in which case the terminal is described as a  with the awarding of a major construction contract for the Pier 400 project.

When fully complete in 2004, Pier 400 will be one of the largest container terminals in the world.

The Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Board of Harbor Commissioners, meeting in San Pedro, awarded Sully-Miller Contracting Co. a $78.1 million contract for developing so-called backlands at Pier 400.

The contract, which represents the first of two phases, provides for 308 acres of backlands, those that sit away from the wharf WHARF. A space of ground artificially prepared for the reception of merchandise from a ship or vessel, so as to promote the convenient loading and discharge of such vessel. , to be cleared and paved pave

. The contractor has 540 days to complete the work once a Notice to Proceed is issue by the port.

``The contract for the backlands is a milestone,'' said Larry Nye, vice president of Long Beach-based marine experts Moffat-Nichols Engineers. ``It allows Los Angeles to finish Pier 400 and allows Long Beach to shuffle their tenants.''

Terminal operator Maersk Pacific Ltd., now at the Port of Long Beach, signed a lease with Los Angeles to move into Pier 400 in 2002. Once Maersk leaves, Long Beach will begin a decadelong dec·ade·long

Lasting a decade: a decadelong national research effort. 
 program that will consolidate many of the existing terminals into a handful of large, so-called megaterminals, each more than 300 acres in size.

The new pier will help the Port of Los Angeles retain its title as the Western Hemisphere's largest port, a bragging right regained in 2000 after six years of being second to the Port of Long Beach.
