CONTINUING THE TREND; ONCE AGAIN, NEWBURY PARK IS A FORCE.

Byline: Jim Inghram Staff Writer

There has been one certainty the past few seasons in the Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. The Marmonte Leauge is part of the CIF Southern Section. It's true again in 1999-2000, but not far behind is Newbury Park High.

The Panthers have compiled 62 victories the past three seasons and have finished in second place during the last twoMarmonte League campaigns.

Only one starter returns from last season's team that went 19-6 overall and 10-2 in league - and Will Svitek Will Svitek (born January 8, 1982 in Prague, Czech Republic) is an American football player who currently plays tackle for the Kansas City Chiefs. He played in 38 games (18 starts) at Stanford University. He recorded 60 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, 2.  is still with the football team.

But don't count the Panthers out.

Junior guard Aaron Bobik, who missed all of last season with a broken bone in his right wrist, would have played significant minutes had he been healthy.

and Ryan Wire, both reserves last season, are also back.

When Svitek returns, his presence in the middle will greatly enhance the Panthers. He averaged 8.8 points and six rebounds a game last season.

``Actually I hope I don't see Will out here for a couple more weeks,'' said Newbury Park coach Steve Johnson Steve Johnson is the name of:

.

That would mean that the football team would be playing for a Southern Section championship.

``When the football team does well,'' Johnson said, ``the whole school gets excited and into athletics and that will spill over Verb 1. spill over - overflow with a certain feeling; "The children bubbled over with joy"; "My boss was bubbling over with anger"

 into the basketball season.

``It will take Will a couple of games to make the transition to basketball, but he is a great athlete and I'm sure he'll come in and do well.''

Svitek will be counted on to be the team's defensive leader, main rebounder and provide inside scoring.

``He's been more of a role player the past two years,'' Johnson said. ``This year he will have to be more of a leader.''

At 6-foot-7 and a solid 235 pounds, Svitek is tall enough and strong enough to compete with anyone in the league at the post position.

Bobik, 6-foot-3, is not as fiery as his older brothers Daniel (class of '98) and Brian (class of '99), but his desire to succeed burns just as bright.

``Aaron is Aaron ben Nisi was a Jewish ruler of the Khazars mentioned in the Khazar Correspondence. He reigned around the year 900 CE. Little is known about his reign. As with other Bulanid rulers, it is unclear whether Aaron was Khagan or Khagan Bek of the Khazars, although the latter is  an important part of our team,'' Johnson said. ``He seems to be 100 percent and not favoring the wrist. He will need a couple of games under his belt to get to where he wants to be. He hasn't played in a year and that's a long time.

``It could be January until he is completely comfortable, but that could be said for the whole team. It's going to take us a while to jell jell

Harris (6-4) and Wire, both seniors, combined for 6.2 points and four rebounds a game last season. Their roles on this team will increase greatly.

``John is not the greatest athlete, but he is a smart player,'' Johnson said. ``He's a good shooter and he can hurt teams from 3-point range. He's really steady. He is one of those players every teams needs to be successful.''

Wire, who will play at off guard, is the team's defensive stopper.

``He sets the tone defensively,'' Johnson said. ``He is very aggressive for a guard, which makes him a good all-around rebounder. He has a nice outside shot, too.''

A couple of newcomers that will see time in the rotation are 6-foot-6 senior Matt Currie cur·rie

``Matt will give us some inside presence and take some of the load off of Will,'' Johnson said. ``Shane is a talented all-around player and he was the leading scorer on the freshman and junior varsity junior varsity

``I think we are a playoff team,'' Johnson said.
