LANCASTER - In conjunction with World AIDS Day World AIDS Day, observed December 1 each year, is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection. AIDS has killed more than 25 million people, with an estimated 38. , the Catalyst Foundation is sponsoring several contests to raise community awareness about tolerance, compassion, personal work ethic and personal spirituality.

Entrants 6 to 21 years old can use drawing, painting, crayon crayon, any drawing material available in stick form. The term includes charcoal, conte crayon, chalk, pastel, grease crayon, litho crayon, and children's wax colors. , pastels or collage in an art contest based on the story ``The Little Engine That Could.'' Entrants should illustrate what it means to them to live each day with a can-do attitude.

An essay contest is open to writers 13 to 21. Participants must explain, in one to two typed pages, how they have used or intend to use tolerance to make a positive impact on the world.

Nominations are being accepted for an award to an adult who has continued to make a positive difference in the lives of others in the community while overcoming personal adversity. Nominations should each be one to two typed pages.

The deadline for all contests is 5 p.m. Nov. 9, and entries and nominations should be submitted to the foundation office at 44758 Elm Ave., Lancaster. Prizes will be awarded at 3 p.m. Nov. 30 during the group's World AIDS Day ceremonies.
