CONTEST WINNERS INCLUDE LOCAL `MIGHTY DOGS'.

Five local pooches with canine can-do attitudes are winners in this year's Mighty Dog 2000 Calendar Photo Contest, sponsored by parent company Friskies.

Mighty Dog is marketed specifically for small dogs, and each owner who entered the contest had to send a photo plus write a short essay about why his dog was a ``mighty'' dog. The essay, the photo and general creativity each counted for a third of the points awarded to the hundreds of dogs entered.

The local winners include:

Remy, a Lhasa apso Lhasa apso (lä`sə ăp`sō), breed of small, alert nonsporting dog developed in Tibet many centuries ago. It stands about 11 in. (27.9 cm) high at the shoulder and weighs from 13 to 15 lb (5.9–6.8 kg).  owned by Joyce Hoebel of Santa Monica Santa Monica (săn`tə mŏn`ĭkə), city (1990 pop. 86,905), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1886. Tourism and retailing are important, and the city has motion-picture, biotechnology, and software industries. , who was named grand prize winner and the calendar's cover dog.

Panda Sue Potsticker, a Boston terrier Boston terrier, breed of small, lively nonsporting dog developed in the United States in the second half of the 19th cent. It stands between 14 and 17 in. (35.6–43.2 cm) high at the shoulder and weighs from 13 to 25 lb (5.9–11.3 kg).  owned by Karen Freidenberger of Burbank, who's featured in the month of August.

Remy's grand prize winner status netted her owner $2,500 and a one-year supply of Mighty Dog dog food. Friskies is also donating 25 cases of Mighty Dog food to the local humane society A humane society is a group that aims to stop animal suffering due to cruelty or other reasons. Examples
