contest sponsored by the Repertory East Playhouse in its first season will see his play produced the first week of July.

``North of Pelican Rapids,'' written by Greg Elsasser, tells the story of a teenager who arrives to pick up his prom date only to find out she has been detained and he must be entertained by her quirky parents.

Elsasser, 33, is a playwright by passion and a high school drama and English teacher at Warren High School Warren High School is the name of several high schools:

  • Warren High School (Downey, California)
  • Warren Township High School in Gurnee, Illinois
  • Warren High School (Monmouth, Illinois)
in Downey by necessity. This is his first award-winning play and he's excited to see it produced.

``This is the first play that's been recognized by someone other than me and my mother,'' he joked.

Professing a liking for Mountain Dew, he changed the condition of the lead characters in his show.

``Instead of them being drunk, I had them high on caffeine from the Mountain Dew,'' he said. ``Then it kind of descends into madness. Kind of a black comedy.''

More than 20 submissions were received in the contest, which opened in March and ran through May. The show will be presented as part of the REP's Signature Series, a reduced-price showcase of theater that will run at 8 p.m. July 8, 9, 15 and 16.

``I believe the reason we chose 'North of Pelican Rapids' will be clear; it is wonderfully written and quite hilarious,'' said Craig Duswalt, producing artistic director of the playhouse.

Opening for Elsasser's play will be ``Hope of the Future,'' two one-act plays written by Shannon Keith Kelly and produced by the Sugar- Free Theatre Company.

The two one-acts are ``Rapid Transit,'' a comedy about two women who become unlikely friends while waiting for a subway train and ``Practical Magic,'' a story about two pregnant couples leaving a natural childbirth natural childbirth: see birth.
