CONSUMERS POWER'S SERVICE REPS HELP CUSTOMERS IN 140 LANGUAGES

JACKSON, Mich., Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Consumers Power Company's customer service representatives are equipped to assist customers in 140 different languages with the help of AT&T Language Line Services interpreters.
Underscoring Consumers Power's commitment to continuously improve service, customer service representatives handling calls from foreign- language customers now have access to an AT&T 800 number to get an interpreter on the line as a third party. The 24-hour service has been in operation since late October.
"Consumers Power already has a list of employees who speak other languages and can help customers, but they aren't always available and cannot translate as many languages," said Mary Lee Kaltenbach, Consumers Power consumers affairs supervisor and coordinator of the project. "Language Line enables us to help those customers around the clock."
An estimated 5 percent of Consumers Power customers require assistance from interpreters.
Introduced in 1989, AT&T operates Language Line through operators in Monterey, Calif., and specially tested and trained interpreters on duty in their homes throughout the U.S. and Canada 24 hours a day. The operators know slang, idioms and nuances of their languages.
Consumers Power Company, the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy Corporation (NYSE: CMS), is Michigan's largest natural gas and electric utility serving 6 million of the state's 9 1/2 million residents in 67 of the 68 Lower Peninsula counties.
