CONSULTING ENGINEERS CHOSEN FOR DESIGN OF SECOND BLUE WATER BRIDGE

LANSING, Mich., Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Construction of a second Blue Water bridge span between Point Edward, Ontario, and Port Huron, Mich., is one step closer to reality, the Michigan Department of Transportation (M-DOT) and the Blue Water Bridge Authority announced today.
Consulting engineers for the preliminary design of a second bridge were selected this week. A joint venture team will immediately begin with plans for the new bridge, with completion of the plans scheduled for January 1994.
Construction may start in the first quarter of 1995.
"The additional capacity will enhance Michigan's ability to compete in a global marketplace, opening more opportunities for trade between U.S, Canadian, Pacific Rim and European markets," said Gloria Jeff, M-DOT's planning chief. "It also will help attract businesses considering locating in Michigan."
The construction of the span is a joint effort of M-DOT and the Blue Water Bridge Authority. The joint venture team is comprised of American and Canadian firms. They are:
 American teams:
-- Modjeski and Masters, Inc. of Mechanicsburg, Pa.
-- Testing Engineers and Consultants, Inc. of Troy, Mich.
-- Rama, Roa & Alfred of Detroit
 Canadian teams:
-- Buckland and Taylor Ltd. of Vancouver, British Columbia
-- Monteith and Sutherland Ltd. of Point Edward, Ontario
-- Rowan, Williams, Davies and Irwin, Inc. of Guelph, Ontario
-- Dominion Soils Investigation Inc. of Point Edward
Buckland and Taylor Ltd. and Modjeski and Masters Inc. are the prime consultants responsible for the work. Both firms are long-span, high- level bridge specialists. Modjeski and Masters designed the existing Blue Water Bridge in 1936.
The engineering team will work closely with Giffels Ltd. of Toronto which is currently carrying out the environmental assessment of the project.
The plan for the second span comes from a recommendation by the Blue Water Bridge Task Force. The task force included not only transportation officials but representatives of the communities adjacent to the existing bridge.
