CONSULTANT QUESTIONED BY BOARD MEMBERS.

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. ``I wish the board had invited some of the leadership of the alliance to speak directly with the recruiters,'' said Dan Goetz, president of Ultra Violet Devices Inc. and past president of the alliance. ``We've never seen minutes and heard no response back to the community from that meeting.''

Gatti Associates was hired in December for $14,500 plus expenses of $3,980 to conduct the search for the new superintendent. The first qualification listed in the agreement is to ``receive from appropriate district and community representatives the professional qualifications and skills desired for the position.''

Gatti said that extensive background checks will be conducted, stating, ``We don't want to send you someone who's carrying baggage.''

The board will review top candidates' applications during a closed-door session at its March 2 meeting. Gatti anticipates interviews will be concluded by March 14.
