Land-grading work is likely to begin in late March under two contracts totaling $1.8 million for an expanded Marie Kerr Park and a new east-side aquatic park Aquatic Park may refer to:

``We're very excited to see this move forward,'' Mayor Jim Ledford said last week. ``There's a lot of anticipation in the community. We want to deliver what was advertised.''

Park construction is being divided up into multiple contracts, a move aimed at increasing the number of companies submitting bids. Such an approach was used with the Palmdale Metrolink station, now under construction, and resulted in savings of $1.1 million, city officials said.

``These are enormous projects,'' said Leon Swain, the city's public works public works

The parks will be on 40 acres east of the 18-acre Marie Kerr Park on Rancho ran·cho

Plans for the expansion of Marie Kerr Park include an indoor swimming pool, seven softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  fields and an amphitheater amphitheater (ăm`fəthē'ətər, ăm`pə–), open structure used for the exhibition of gladiatorial contests, struggles of wild beasts, sham sea battles, and similar spectacles. .

Plans for the east-side park include an indoor pool and a Western mine town-themed aquatic park with three 35-foot-tall water slides. The plans also include space for a future satellite library branch.

About $32.3 million of the construction costs will come from a parks assessment approved in 2002 by Palmdale property owners. The levy is $36 a year on homeowners.

About $9 million will come from city fees assessed on new housing tracts, grants from state parks bonds, extra assessment income as new homes are built and other sources.
