 - Officials were told Monday Monday: see week.  that the increased cost for a planned parking structure that would create 800 new spaces for Glendale Community College Glendale Community College can refer to one of two colleges in the United States.

is due to the rising price of steel and concrete.

The expected cost of the six-level parking structure was estimated at $19 million when voters approved Measure G in 2002, as part of a $98 million campus upgrade package. But the most recent estimate pegs the price of the parking structure at $24.5 million.

``The biggest factor that impacted the cost increase was construction costs,'' Ron Saxton Ronald L. Saxton (born 1954, Albany, Oregon) is a lawyer[1] and Republican politician in Oregon. He graduated from Albany High School in 1972, earned a bachelors degree from Willamette University in 1976[2] , a principal with International Parking Design Inc., said before the school's board Monday.

``The cost of concrete has gone up considerably, the cost of steel ... has gone up considerably. And this is a parking structure. It's it's

 concrete and steel,'' Saxton said.

College officials are concerned that the increased cost of building the parking structure could take funds away from other Measure G projects, which include the expansion of a satellite campus and the building of a health education facility.

The college will not know the true cost of the project until it gets bids from construction companies, officials said.

Trustees have heard from students complaining about the difficulty in finding parking at the campus, and they said the college needs the new parking structure. But the board has shown concern about the increased cost of the planned structure.

``I want to know what we're getting into,'' said board of trustees board of trustees Politics The posse of thugs who oversee an institution's administration. See Board of directors.  member Vahe Peroomian.

Glendale Water and Power will install solar panels on the top level of the parking structure to generate electricity. The installation is not expected to cost the college significantly more.

The parking structure is expected to be finished in 2007.
