 CONSTRUCTION COMPLETED ON MICHIGAN'S
 LARGEST LANDFILL GAS-TO-ENERGY PROJECT
SUMPTER TOWNSHIP, Mich., Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Michigan's largest landfill gas-to-electricity facility is being dedicated today at City Sand and Landfill, Inc. located in southwestern Wayne County.
The $10 million facility -- Sumpter Energy Associates -- is a partnership undertaken by City Management Corporation of Detroit and Michigan Cogeneration Systems of Novi. The state-of-the-art facility will convert 4.5 million cubic feet of landfill gas each day into electricity using 10 Caterpillar engine/generator sets. Under contract with the Detroit Edison Company, 7.6 megawatts of electricity will be distributed through Edison's power lines providing all the electricity needs for 5,000 homes.
The gas used to produce the electricity is approximately 55 percent methane, 40 percent carbon dioxide, 5 percent hydrogen and other trace components and is a natural product of decomposition at the 240-acre landfill site.
A four-mile-long pipeline network has been constructed linking 86 wells at the landfill near Willow and Elwell roads in Sumpter Township. The gas will be drawn from the wells to the processing plant through the pipeline. Operation of the facility is currently under way.
According to John Vine, P.E., vice president of engineering and construction at City Management, the recovery process has energy as well as environment benefits. "This is the ultimate in recycling: We are conserving our natural fossil-fuel resources, eliminating a potential source of odor pollution and converting methane gas to a productive use."
City Management Corporation is Michigan's largest independently owned environmental services company. Michigan Cogeneration Systems is one of the leading landfill gas-to-energy developers in the United States.
