CONSOLATION DIFFICULT FOR H.-W.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer

The disappointment on the Harvard-Westlake players' faces was evident. Not just because their season ended Saturday Saturday: see week; Sabbath.  but also because this game was their chance to reach even higher levels. And they missed.

Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  Regional final. Since the team is young (four starters returning next season), some might think this is the first of many appearances.

``You never can tell,'' Taylor said. ``My idea is to do it now. Of course, we have high hopes for next year. We're optimistic op·ti·mist

The players seemed to think so, too. They all wore similarly sad expressions as they received their runner-up medals.

Roberts, and the rest of the Wolverines, for that matter, will take with them the memories of what went right and what didn't, since there were some of each.

There was the second quarter, in which the Wolverines battled back from a 10-2 first-period deficit to take a 24-21 halftime lead.

Most key in that period were sophomore guard Brooke Porter's two 3-pointers that gave the Wolverines their first lead. Porter found herself open on the left side on two consecutive possessions, and she hit the shot each time, accounting for half of her 12 points.

``I told the girls at halftime they did a great job being down and coming back to lead by three,'' Taylor said.

Said Porter: ``My performance wasn't all that outstanding in league. In league, I didn't need to score. I stepped up in the playoffs.''

Another who did was junior Omelogo Udeze, who had some success breaking Alemany's press, rebounding and penetrating penetrating

``She's a big girl who can handle the ball,'' Porter said.

However, there were some minuses on the day. Udeze only scored two points off her dribbling. The team shot 24 percent (19 of 79) from the field and wasn't always successful at penetrating Alemany's 2-2-1 zone. Players committed key traveling violations in the fourth period.

``We played our game in the second quarter,'' Taylor said. ``Other than that, they pretty much controlled the tempo tempo [Ital.,=time], in music, the speed of a composition. The composer's intentions as to tempo are conventionally indicated by a set of Italian terms, of which the principal ones are presto (very fast), vivace (lively), allegro (fast),  of the game.''
