CONSERVATIVE GROUP ENDORSES 13 CANDIDATES; HOPEFULS SPAN 8 LOCAL RACES.

Thirteen candidates in eight local races have been endorsed by the conservative Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

Assembly leaders said they looked at candidates' voting records and whether they adhered to such beliefs as supporting local control of public schools, reflecting Judeo-Christian values, valuing patriotism and opposing the teacher training course on language and culture called CLAD.

Group officials said the endorsements can carry weight with certain voters.

``I think it can with certain aspects of the voting bloc A voting bloc is a group of voters that are so motivated by a specific concern or group of concerns that it helps determine how they vote in elections. The divisions between voting blocs are known as cleavage. , people who are aligned with us in values of religious background, conservative voters, which most of this community is,'' said Pat McIver, a director on the group's 17-member board and a member of the group for three years.

 for Palmdale mayor over incumbent Jim Ledford, and endorsed Vice Mayor Terence Judge for re-election.

Candidates received an endorsement if they got a two-thirds majority vote at a general membership meeting of the group, McIver said. No candidates in the east side and Hughes-Elizabeth Lakes Union School District races received endorsements because they did not secure the necessary two-thirds vote, McIver said.

The organization was formed in the 1970s and has more than 100 members, McIver said.

Candidates endorsed by the group in the November 1995 election included candidates Mel Kleven and Andy Visokey in the Lancaster School District board race; Carney for the Antelope Valley Union High School District race; and Larry Logsdon and Kenneth White in the Palmdale School District race. All except White were elected.
