At a Monday afternoon news conference, officials unveiled plans for a city-college partnership in which state-of-the-art water and energy conservation measures will be installed in four science buildings. As part of the project, a public exhibit to showcase the technology will be developed. City officials have committed $500,000 to the project. The first installment was turned over to the college Monday. ``The topic of energy is certainly in a prominent position in the state of California California (kăl'ĭfôr`nyə), most populous state in the United States, located in the Far West; bordered by Oregon (N), Nevada and, across the Colorado River, Arizona (E), Mexico (S), and the Pacific Ocean (W). . Bill Taylor, director of business services for the college, said the money will be spent on conservation measures in the physics-biology and chemistry-math buildings, and two new buildings that will be built nearby. The equipment will include low-flush toilets, occupancy sensors

The college will also upgrade its energy management computer system and its chillers, which are used to cool buildings. Using solar electric panels installed on its roof, one of the new buildings at the south end of the science complex will be able to generate 15 kilowatts of electricity, providing for one-third of its own energy needs. Inside this building will be an exhibit featuring a meter that shows how much energy is being generated by the solar panels. The exhibit area is also proposed to feature demonstrations of other energy-saving technology. College officials plan to reach out to K-12 students to come visit the exhibit and create a variety of programs to help them to learn about energy conservation. The construction work on the four buildings is expected to be completed by fall 2003. The cost is estimated at $13 million. The city's funding for the project came from a 2.85 percent public benefit charge that appears on residents' utility bills. Each year, the city collects about $3.3 million from the charges. ``This is a wonderful thing to have happened for the college and for the public to know what the public benefit part of their bill is doing,'' said Mary Hamilton
