CONSERVANCY TO TAP PUBLIC ON PROPOSITIONS.

To prepare for the possible approval in March of parkland and water conservation initiatives, a Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy is an agency of the state of California in the United States founded in 1979 and dedicated to the acquisition of land in the Santa Susana and Santa Monica Mountains and the Simi Hills, north and west of Los Angeles, for preservation as open  advisory committee is asking people how the money should be spent.

The advisory committee will hold a public hearing today in Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  to collect comments.

If approved by voters in March, Proposition 12 - The Safe Neighborhood Parks Neighborhood parks, which generally range in size up to 30 acres, serve as a social and recreational focal points for neighborhoods and are the basic units of a park system. Many include a playground. , Clean Water, Clean Air and Coastal Protection Bond Act of 2000 - would allocate $35 million to the conservancy to acquire, improve or restore park, wildlife or natural areas.

, Clean Water, Watershed Protection The term watershed refers to an area of land that drains precipitation that falls on it to a common point. These points could be streams, lakes, etc. Precipitatoin falling on any part of a watershed can travel quickly on the surface of the land, known as surface runoff, or travel through  and Flood Protection Act of 1999 - would make the conservancy eligible for grants to finance the protection of rivers and watersheds and the prevention of pollution.

``The most important reason for these hearings is to hear from the various constituency groups, cities or Sierra Clubs about what projects are important to their areas,'' said Rorie Skei, the conservancy's deputy director for natural resources and planning. ``We can add them to our work program which gives us a framework and lets us know how to focus our attention.''

The conservancy is a state agency that has been working for nearly 20 years to preserve, buy, protect or restore pieces of Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  in order to create a system of urban, rural or river parks, wildlife habitat, trails or open space.

The conservancy owns approximately 40,000 acres in Ventura and Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  counties.

Skei said the conservancy hopes that cities and residents will help it create a list of trails that need improvement or land the conservancy can purchase and preserve.

, spokesman for the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District, said staff members are reviewing potential projects they could suggest.

``This is a great opportunity for this agency to participate with the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy to propose projects that will benefit not only residents in our jurisdiction but all state residents,'' Johnson said. ``We plan to have a full list of viable projects.''
