CONSEP: CHECKMATE CM RECEIVES EXPANDED EUP ACREAGE

BEND, Ore., March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- CheckMate CM(TM), a mating disruption product for control of codling moth in apples, pears and walnuts, has received an Experimental Use Permit (EUP) from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for approximately 12,000 acres for 1993, Consep Inc. said today. The approved acreage covers 32 states, with the majority of acreage in Washington and California.
The expanded EUP acreage represents a four-fold increase over 1992 levels, according to William Raven, senior vice president of Sales and Marketing for Consep Inc., makers of CheckMate CM. "We are working very closely with EPA to bring CheckMate CM to the market in a timely fashion," Raven said. "Our field testing programs over the last two years have made us very optimistic and excited about this product."
CheckMate CM uses a patented controlled release delivery system to release codlemone, a pheromone which disrupts mating in codling moths. Pheromenes are volatile biological chemicals emitted by insects as part of their communication systems.
CheckMate CM is intended for use as part of an Integrated Pest Management program. For optimal results, it is applied early in the season as soon as the first codling moths are detected through a trapping or monitoring program. CheckMate CM is available only to participants and cooperators in an EPA-approved Experimental Use Program.
Other CheckMate products fully registered with the EPA and in use throughout the world include CheckMate PBW for control of pink bollworm in cotton, CheckMate OFM for control of oriental fruit moth in peaches and nectarines and CheckMate TPW for control of tomato pinworm in fresh market and processing tomatoes.
In additional to the CheckMate line of mating disruption products, Consep Inc. markets the BioLure line of insect monitoring traps and the SureFire line of pest control products for consumer markets. Consep recently introduced an improved BioLure codling moth lure which provides eight weeks' duration, giving growers and PCAs more consistent trap catches over a longer period of time.
