CONRAIL OPENS AUTO PARTS SEQUENCE CENTER SERVING CHRYSLER TOLEDO ASSEMBLY PLANT

TOLEDO, Ohio, Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Conrail's (NYSE: CRR) Toledo Sequence Center at Stanley Yard opened yesterday to serve Chrysler Corporation's (NYSE: C) Toledo Assembly Plant 3.
At the center, Dodge Dakota frames arriving on specially equipped 89-foot flatcars are transloaded, sorted and "sequenced" into production line order for truck delivery to the plant. A.O. Smith of Milwaukee manufactures the frames.
The center is unique because it is Chrysler's first use of rail for the delivery of critical production-sequenced material. This enables the auto manufacturer to "sequence" auto parts for truck delivery to meet precise assembly line orders.
"This is the type of innovative product that railroads were not known for in the past," said George P. Turner, Conrail's assistant vice president-automotive. "By becoming an integral part of the production process, we add value to our traditional service by solving a logistical bottleneck that existed at the assembly plants. This way, we can meet Chrysler's needs for precision and become an invaluable partner in the inbound logistics chain."
The railroad rehabilitated an engine house in the yard that had not been used for about ten years. The 50,000 square-foot building houses a 40-ton overhead crane and has three tracks inside for railcars. The construction project took about 60 days to complete. The center is operated by Jay Star Consolidated.
Conrail, with headquarters in Philadelphia, operates a rail freight network in 14 Northeastern and Midwestern states, the District of Columbia, and the Province of Quebec.
