CONRAIL INVESTING $10.2 MILLION THIS YEAR ON SOUTHERN TIER LINE TRACK IMPROVEMENTS

PHILADELPHIA, April 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Rail installation crews from Consolidated Rail Corporation (NYSE: CRR) (Conrail) began work March 29 on the railroad's $10.2 program to upgrade portions of its Southern Tier Line in New York State. The work, to be completed in late fall, adds to nearly $9.1 million in track improvements on the line in the last year.
"This significant investment demonstrates, in hard dollars, Conrail's commitment to the Southern Tier," said James A. Hagen, Conrail's Chairman, president and chief executive officer. "Current and future customers will benefit from the improvements we are making in the region's rail infrastructure."
This year's program includes the installation of nearly 40 miles of continuous welded rail, 28,700 crossties, and 14 switches, and the surfacing of 142 miles of track.
The rail installation portion of the program includes 14.8 miles between Campville and Chemung; 19.1 miles between Elmira and Canaseraga, and 6.8 miles between Alden and East Buffalo. The remainder of the rail will be installed at various other locations. Crossties will be installed between Deposit and Gulf Summit, Castile and Rock Glen, Alden and East Buffalo, and various other locations. The railbed will be surfaced at these and additional locations along the line. The crosstie and surfacing work will begin in mid-summer.
Last year's program primarily involved the installation of crossties and surfacing of railbed at various locations along the line, including segments between Lordville and Deposit, Lanesboro and Johnson City, and Corning and Hornell.
Conrail operates a rail freight network in 14 Northeastern and Midwestern states, the District of Columbia, and the Province of Quebec.
