CONRAIL ELECTS NICHOLS VP-RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT; HIEBER, KANE NAMED TO FINANCE, INVESTOR RELATIONS POSTS

 PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Frank H. Nichols has been elected vice president-Resource Development of Consolidated Rail Corporation (NYSE: CRR) (Conrail), effective Feb. 1.
 He succeeds Richard C. Sullivan, who is retiring.
 Thomas J. Hieber has been named to succeed Nichols as assistant vice president-Financial Planning. John F. Kane will succeed Hieber as assistant treasurer responsible for investor relations.
 Nichols will be responsible in his new position for Conrail's human resource and health services activities. Nichols joined Conrail in 1988 as assistant vice president-Finance and served last year as the first chairman of the company's operating committee, a cross-functional group that manages implementation of Conrail's financial plan. He began his railroad career in 1969 with the Louisville & Nashville, serving in finance, engineering and operations positions with the L&N and its successors, the Seaboard System and CSX Transportation. He holds a bachelor of science degree from the University of Kentucky and a master of business administration degree from Jacksonville University.
 Hieber will be responsible in his new position for financial planning and analysis, budgeting and costing. Hieber joined Conrail in 1975 from the U.S. Railway Association (USRA), a federal agency which was responsible for planning and monitoring Conrail operations before its transfer to the private sector. At Conrail, he has held a variety of positions in the Marketing, Operations and Finance departments. Hieber holds a bachelor of business administration degree from the University of Toledo, and has pursued graduate business studies at Rutgers University.
 Kane began his railroad career with the Pennsylvania Railroad, a Conrail predecessor. At Conrail and its predecessors, he has served in a variety of finance and budget positions, most recently as director- Budget & Control. Kane, who also serves as an adjunct instructor in management with Penn State University, holds a bachelor of arts degree from St. Joseph's College.
 Sullivan, vice president-Resource Development since 1983, joined Conrail in 1976 as corporate secretary after serving as USRA's vice president-Public & Government Affairs. Prior to that, he was director- Public Affairs for the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey. At Conrail, he has also served as vice president-Passenger Services and vice president-Public Affairs. From 1986 through 1992, he was president of the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad, which is 51 percent owned by Conrail. Sullivan holds a bachelor of arts degree from Allegheny College and a master of arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He also attended the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Business School.
 Conrail operates a rail freight network in 14 Northeastern and Midwestern states, the District of Columbia, and the Province of Quebec.
