CONNECTICUT SELECTS ENVIROTEST TO NEGOTIATE THE STATE'S ENHANCED AUTO EMISSIONS TESTING CONTRACT; NEGOTIATIONS WILL BEGIN IMMEDIATELY

TUCSON, Ariz., Dec. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Envirotest Systems Corp. (NASDAQ: ENVI) today announced that Connecticut has selected Envirotest to negotiate the state's enhanced auto emissions testing contract. The Connecticut program will average approximately 1.2 million paid tests annually, and is expected to generate annual revenues of approximately $20 million and a total backlog of $150 million. Envirotest anticipates that contract negotiations with the state will begin immediately.
Connecticut represents Envirotest's fourth selection in a two-month period, following the Pennsylvania, Colorado and downstate New York programs. The four programs together are expected to increase Envirotest's revenues from $90 million to approximately $245 million and its backlog from about $300 million to over $1.4 billion.
Chester Davenport, chairman of Envirotest, said, "Connecticut represents another important program for Envirotest. We have operated the Connecticut emissions program since 1983, and accordingly, our capital costs will be lower than if this were a start-up project, and we had to build all new facilities. We will, however, be modifying our existing 19 facilities in Connecticut, and will build 12 additional facilities.
"It is gratifying as the incumbent contractor to have the state of Connecticut confirm its confidence in Envirotest, and to give our company the opportunity to continue providing the state with a quality, cost-effective emissions testing program.
"As mandated by the 1990 Amendments to the Federal Clean Air Act, Envirotest will be using the new IM-240 test in Connecticut. In implementing the new test, we will continue to provide Connecticut motorists with the highest level of customer-friendly and convenient service," Mr. Davenport said.
The Connecticut contract will be for seven and one-half years, commencing Jan. 1, 1995.
Envirotest Systems Corp. is the leading provider of centralized vehicle emissions testing programs for states and municipalities. In addition, Envirotest is the only domestic provider of contractor- operated centralized testing services outside the United States.
