CONNECTICUT NATIONAL BANK TO CHANGE NAME TO SHAWMUT
HARTFORD, Conn., June 19 -- Shawmut National Corporation (NYSE: SNC)

announced that one of its principal subsidiaries, Connecticut National Bank, will change its name to Shawmut on Jan. 11, 1993.
Joel B. Alvord, chairman and chief executive officer of Shawmut National Corporation, said, "We are changing the name for the sake of consistency and clarity in the three New England states where we operate. The Connecticut National Bank name has served us well over the years. By adopting the Shawmut name in Connecticut, we are making Shawmut a truly New England name and signaling that the merger of Hartford National Corporation and Shawmut Corporation is complete."
Hartford National Corporation and Shawmut Corporation merged in 1988 to form a new bank holding company, Shawmut National Corporation. Shawmut National has and will continue to maintain dual headquarters in Hartford and Boston.
"So while our name in Connecticut will change, we will still be the same institution and the same people who understand the needs of customers and help them to achieve their financial goals," said Alvord.
Gunnar S. Overstrom, president and chief executive officer of Connecticut National Bank, said, "Only Connecticut National's name is changing. Everything else will remain the same. Customers -- both consumers and businesses -- will be served by the same dedicated employees at the same locations."
Connecticut National Bank has operated under various names in Connecticut for the past 200 years and presently operates 143 offices in the major markets of all six counties in the state.
In Rhode Island, the bank operates 12 branches under the name Shawmut Bank of Rhode Island. Those branches, too, will conduct business under the name Shawmut as of Jan. 11.
Signage at all locations will be changed to the new name.
Shawmut National Corporation is a superregional bank holding company with assets of $22.7 billion. The company offers a range of financial products to consumers and small- to medium-sized businesses. The company also offers financial services to correspondent banks, governmental entities, insurance companies, and corporate customers based in New England and select national markets. Shawmut National Corporation operates a total of 334 branches in southern New England.
