CONNECT Announces Java-Based Client/Server Object Architecture for Real-Time Interactive Commerce; J-Bahn Unites The Platform Independence of Sun's Java With The Capabilities of CONNECT's High-End Interactive Commerce Applications.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 21, 1996--CONNECT, Inc., (NASDAQ NASDAQ

J-Bahn is now available in final Beta status and is scheduled for full production availability in December.

CONNECT's J-Bahn provides a high level, high performance communications capability designed to overcome the performance and functionality limitations of HTTP HTTP

) framework and establish connections directly with the company's OneServer application. These connections from Java to OneServer are high-speed and session-based, allowing the creation of real-time, fully interactive, commerce applications.

"J-Bahn provides a super highway for Java applications and applets, enabling real-time Internet-based interactive commerce. For the first time, Java and enterprise-class interactive commerce applications can work together," said Tom Kehler, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of CONNECT. "When coupled with our OneServer, J-Bahn provides the ability to offer superior interactive commerce capabilities, which can translate into greater Internet-based bottom line revenues."

J-Bahn Enables Advanced Interactive Commerce Applications

With J-Bahn, CONNECT's OneServer and OrderStream customers will be able to add advanced, differentiated Java capabilities to their commerce Web Sites. For example, J-Bahn users can create a real-time shopping cart that automatically calculates totals and subtotals. Or users can create fully interactive product configuration capabilities, real-time adaptive marketing features within a single Web page, helper applets for such routine features as error checking and discount calculations, and context-sensitive help Context-sensitive help is a kind of online help that is obtained from a specific point in the state of the software, providing help for the situation that is associated with that state. .

CONNECT is also using J-Bahn to add capabilities to its application products. The first product to result from this effort is StatusMinder, an add-on module to the company's OrderStream application that provides real-time access to product pricing, availability and order status information. StatusMinder users can leave the application running on the PC desktop and constantly be provided with updates as product pricing or availability changes. StatusMinder will ship free with the next version of OrderStream.

"We realized that HTTP and Web-related protocols were not adequate for the level of real-time interaction required for Java-based interactive commerce. Java itself provides only low level tools for server communications," said Dr. Ken Ross, CONNECT's chief technical officer and executive vice president of development. "We built J-Bahn to be a best-of-breed communications protocol Hardware and software standards that govern data transmission between computers. The term "protocol" is very generic and is used for hundreds of different communications methods. A protocol may define the packet structure of the data transmitted or the control commands that manage the  for advanced interactive applications. J-Bahn allows us to provide great object transport and the most advanced interactive commerce application software."

About J-Bahn

J-Bahn provides a high-level, secure Java interface for rapid application or applet development and maps against the OneServer object capabilities. Its object transport layer makes coding easier and direct RSA encryption (cryptography, algorithm) RSA encryption - A public-key cryptosystem for both encryption and authentication, invented in 1977 by Ron Rivest, Adi Shamir, and Leonard Adleman. Its name comes from their initials.

The RSA algorithm works as follows.
provides a secure protocol. And, instead of having to write large amounts of slow, potentially error-ridden Java network code, CONNECT's J-Bahn allows the user to bypass HTTP to connect directly with the OneServer. J-Bahn also establishes and maintains session-based connections.

"We set the stage back in March when we demonstrated a real-world implementation of Sun's Java programming language in an Internet-based application," added Kehler. "Now we're providing the next stage of Java development protocols that directly apply to high-end, scaleable, high-volume interactive commerce."

J-Bahn will be included free with CONNECT OneServer version 1.3 and OrderStream version 1.1, which are available domestically and internationally through CONNECT, and selected resellers and integrators. Current OneServer and OrderStream customers can add J-Bahn functionality as part of their existing maintenance agreement.

About OneServer and OrderStream

Introduced in September 1995, OneServer is based on open standards Specifications for hardware and software that are developed by a standards organization or a consortium involved in supporting a standard. Available to the public for developing compliant products, open standards imply "open systems;" that an existing component in a system can be replaced  -- including UNIX UNIX

The OneServer architecture reduces the amount of custom code and CGI scripting necessary for dynamic site content, resulting in rapid time-to-market for interactive commerce applications.

CONNECT's OrderStream is an Internet-based order management application for business-to-business transactions. OrderStream is a complete, secure Internet application that streamlines and automates the sales channel for business-to-business resellers and distributors. Built on the CONNECT OneServer software platform, OrderStream supports resellers and distributors of various products, including computers, software, peripherals, electronics parts, office equipment, office furniture and office supplies. These products are commonly sold under volume contracts through published catalogs.
