CONNAUGHT LABORATORIES DONATES TETANUS VACCINES TO IOWA FLOOD VICTIMS; TETANUS RISK EXPECTED TO ESCALATE AS CLEAN-UP INTENSIFIES

SWIFTWATER, Pa., July 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Connaught Laboratories, Inc. announced a major relief effort to help victims of the recent record-breaking Midwest floods. In response to the need for vaccines confirmed by Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), Connaught Laboratories donated 20,000 doses of tetanus/diphtheria vaccine (Tetanus and Diphtheria Toxoids Adsorbed) to the Iowa Department of Public Health for distribution to victims and relief workers in flood-stricken counties. This donation will help reduce the risk of tetanus, which is expected to increase as flood waters recede and clean-up efforts intensify.
The huge demand for tetanus vaccines in the flood zones left Iowa's supply of this important vaccine dangerously low. Sen. Tom Harkin has been instrumental in securing national and local resources to help flood victims in Iowa and throughout the flood zones. "The response to the flooding in Iowa has been truly remarkable -- my offices alone have heard from countless Americans offering their assistance. I commend Connaught Laboratories for their generous and much-needed donation of vaccine. I am glad that I and my staff were able to help cut through some of the red tape so that Connaught's donation could be put to use in Iowa in a timely fashion."
The Iowa Department of Public Health will offer Connaught's vaccine free of charge to relief workers and senior citizens who are most at risk of coming into contact with water contaminated with the tetanus toxin producing organism that lives in topsoil and manure that has now become part of the muddy wash flooding communities. In the wake of frequent injuries following natural disasters, the toxin can enter the body through open wounds or sores, attack the central nervous system, and if left untreated, cause fatalities.
Although most U.S. children today are completely protected against tetanus and diphtheria, many adults are unimmunized or become inadequately immunized by failing to get booster doses of vaccines against both diseases every ten years. The combined tetanus and diphtheria toxoids vaccine is generally used in wound management to provide immunity against both of these completely preventable diseases. Connaught's Tetanus and Diphtheria Toxoids Adsorbed vaccine is part of the company's complete line of tetanus products.
Connaught Laboratories, Inc. (CLI) provides the broadest range of vaccines and biologicals commercially available in the United States from a single company. CLI is headquartered in Swiftwater, Pa., where the company is actively involved in immunological research and its applications. In addition, approximately 560 employees are engaged in manufacturing, marketing and distributing vaccines against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, Haemophilus influenzae type b, influenza, yellow fever, rabies and other diseases. CLI is a wholly owned subsidiary of Connaught Laboratories Limited, of Toronto, and a member of the Pasteur Merieux group of companies, the world's largest manufacturer of vaccines for human use.
