He asked the players to identify their goals for this season. They responded with the desire to win the Foothill League with a perfect record and advance in the Southern Section playoffs. Conk said, ``OK, here's what you'll have to do.'' Everyone now thinks Conk's methods were worth it. Some wondered whether Conk could reach these kids. He went from coaching serious collegians in a religious surrounding to a secular world with less-serious high schoolers. Conk knew he could adapt because of his education background. ``Some stronger coaches are your better teachers,'' he said. ``At this level, you go overboard o·ver·board adv. I went overboard with my anecdotes, but it helped.'' Conk gave his players a handbook at the start of the season with such gems as, ``If it's important enough to you, you'll find a way. If not, you'll find an excuse'' and ``Be the great player, not the good player.'' He continued to hand out sayings almost daily. ``We know they're true, but we think it's funny he does it,'' setter setter: see sporting dog. setter Any of three breeds derived from a medieval hunting dog that would set (lie down) when it found birds so that it and the birds could be covered with a net. Then he told her, ``You should be saying, `Hey, coach! I want to go five times!' '' Diaz mentioned Conk's ABCD's to volleyball success: Always do your best, Ball Control, Communication and Discipline. Each part took time to learn. With ball control, players needed to know how to pass and not let the ball play them. With discipline, they needed to learn to do the same thing every single time and not get too high or low emotionally. Communication took the longest. Early in the season, the players went to take team pictures and arrived 10 minutes late to practice. Conk was angry and questioned their commitment. Conk insisted his players tell him when something was bothering them. He also encouraged them to question why they were doing a particular drill if they didn't understand. Above all, he showed he cared about them. ``There's nothing wrong with asking why,'' he said. ``I'd never say, `This is what we'll do.' I'd say, `This is why we do it.' When you show somebody something and it works, that's the proof.'' Slowly, the players started to understand. ``He wanted his team to be the most dedicated,'' Driggs said. ``He wants us to have that kind of attitude.'' After winning league, the players gave Conk a tribute to his work: They covered his house in toilet paper and wrote many of his sayings in chalk on the driveway. ``In reality, they had a new coach, new offense, new defense, new philosophy. That's a lot of newness,'' Conk said. ``The girls welcomed me with open arms. I communicated my belief in them.
