CONGRESSMAN SETS HEARINGS ON PROGRAMS FOR SENIORS.Byline: Cynthia Teed Daily News Staff Writer U.S. Rep. Howard ``Buck'' McKeon wants to take a closer look at the effectiveness of government programs providing assistance to the elderly under the Older Americans Act. To get local input, McKeon, R-Santa Clarita, will chair a congressional field hearing, one of three planned - two being held in California and one in Nebraska. Locally, a hearing is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672. Senior Center. The hearing will be held before the House Subcommittee on Postsecondary Education, Training and Life-Long Learning, which McKeon heads. ``He's looking at all the programs - Meals-on-Wheels, transportation and others - to see which are working well for seniors and which should be reviewed,'' McKeon spokesman David Foy said. The Older Americans Act of 1965 is up for reauthorization. ``It's been around for quite a while and hasn't changed much over the years,'' said Brad Berens, executive director of the senior center. ``They have to reauthorize the act every five years or so, and these hearings are a part of that reauthorization.'' The hearing is open to the public, but only the subpoenaed witnesses can testify.
