east Simi Valley parish is building a new $3.5 million church that nearly will double the size of the sanctuary.

One of two Catholic churches serving Simi Valley, St. Peter Claver is a 10,000-square-foot building that houses a 600-seat sanctuary and a parish hall.

When the Rev. Dennis Mongrain arrived to lead the church about four years ago, there were approximately 600 families that regularly participated in church services and activities.

Today that number has grown to more than 2,000, and a new church is needed to accommodate the growth.

``The community is excited and enthusiastic,'' Mongrain said. ``They're also grateful that we have arrived at this particular moment in the history of our church and our parish. We're hopeful in the months ahead that a new house of worship Noun 1. house of worship - any building where congregations gather for prayer
