The last all-star quarterback in that town was another guy named Mac. Their fiery, on-field personas, not to mention their obvious leadership qualities, are about the same.

``They got a great deal,'' McNown said, chuckling, referring to the fact the Bears acquired four extra draft choices by moving down in the first round and still landed the quarterback they wanted.

``I expect myself to be ready to step in and run the offense when camp begins,'' he said, in that by now familiar, confident way of his. Later, when asked about his relative lack of height, he said:

``If I can get Chicago to start winning, all that will be forgotten about quickly.''

    McNown obviously is.

UCLA All-American offensive tackle Kris Farris was drafted by Pittsburgh in the middle of the third round (74th overall). UCLA safety Larry Atkins went 10 picks later - to Kansas City.

For Atkins, it was a sweet twist to what had been a disappointing end to his college career. ``I'm feeling pretty good,'' said Atkins, who will join former UCLA linebacker Donnie Edwards on the Chiefs' defense. ``I was actually asleep when they picked me, and my cousin came in the room and said they were on the phone. They said, `No. 35, congratulations.' ''

Farris did not return phone calls.
