``There was no partner. I went to rob a (drug) connection but obviously found something else,'' says a handwritten statement that the tabloid claimed was made by Michael Markhasev in jail.

That sentence ends with a drawing of two dotlike eyes and a smile of the kind found in ``happy face'' drawings.

The paper said it obtained the three letters through its own investigation. The letters were turned over to police, said Jerry George, Los Angeles bureau chief for the Florida-based tabloid.

Police could not immediately confirm that Friday.
