Trainer to be tried on abuse charges

MALIBU - A trainer charged with abusing horses at an Agoura stable faces trial in Malibu Superior Court after a judge ruled Thursday at a preliminary hearing that prosecutors have sufficient evidence to prove the charges.

Tom Valter has pleaded not guilty to six charges of animal cruelty and two charges of witness intimidation. Valter was arrested at his Santa Monica home in April on suspicion of whipping and using a cattle prod on the horse Zoolog and whipping and injuring the horse Dominique while training at C.T. Farms last year. He faces arraignment A criminal proceeding at which the defendant is officially called before a court of competent jurisdiction, informed of the offense charged in the complaint, information, indictment, or other charging document, and asked to enter a plea of guilty, not guilty, or as otherwise permitted  on the charges July 25.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office charged Valter following an investigation prompted by the arrest of an Agoura woman who took Zoolog from the stable in August. Mary Anne Hogan pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of trespassing to take Zoolog away in a horse trailer.

Patrols beefed up for student safety

THOUSAND OAKS - The Ventura County Sheriff's Department The Ventura County Sheriff's Department (VCSD) provides law enforcement for the unincorporated areas of Ventura County, California, USA, as well as several cities within the county. The cities that VCSD serves are Camarillo, Fillmore, Moorpark, Ojai, and Thousand Oaks.  will step up patrols at Avenida de las Flores and Moorpark Road through July 20 to address safety concerns in the area.

Concerns arose over Thousand Oaks High School Thousand Oaks High School is a high school established in 1962 and located in Thousand Oaks, California. It is a California Distinguished School, and offers curriculum at all levels for Thousand Oaks students. The mascot is the lancer.  summer-session students running into the path of oncoming traffic.

Traffic officers will be citing pedestrians seen improperly crossing the roadway.

New board named for children's group

CAMARILLO - The Advisory Board of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Ventura County will install new officers at an evening reception Monday.

Jenise Wagar of Ventura is the new president, Julie Mohr of Camarillo is vice president, and Janet Fitzgerald of Thousand Oaks is secretary.

The organization has been helping local children from single-parent families for 24 years. For more information on programs or to volunteer to be a friend to a child, call (805) 485-9001.

Seminars planned for senior center

THOUSAND OAKS - The Goebel Senior Adult Center will host two seminars in July, titled ``Memory Improvement'' and ``Brain Food for Your Whole Body.''

``Memory Improvement,'' presented by a health-care professional from CIGNA CIGNA CG (Connecticut General Life Insurance Company) INA (Insurance Company of North America)  Health Care, is scheduled from 9:30 to 11 a.m. July 25.

``Brain Food for Your Whole Body,'' with information on how your body works and how to increase your energy level, is scheduled from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. July 26.

Both seminars are free for adults 50 and over. They will be held at the senior center, 1385 E. Janss Road, Thousand Oaks.
