State group honors DA's investigator

Richard John Haas (born August 29, 1936 in Spring Green, Wisconsin) is an American muralist who is best known for architectural murals and his use of the
, Ventura County senior district attorney investigator, has been selected as a co-recipient of the Joseph P. McClure Investigator of the Year Award for 1997 by a statewide organization.

The award will be formally presented to Haas by the California District Attorney Investigators Association, whose board of directors made the selection, at its annual conference in September.

Haas, 53, who lives in Ojai Valley with his wife, began his career as an officer with the Ventura Police Department in 1967. He joined the District Attorney's Office as a criminal investigator in 1980.

Haas now supervises the Major Crimes-Trial Preparation Unit for the office's Bureau of Investigation. In his position, Haas supervises all major crime cases, including complex, difficult-to-prove killings and other crimes, Bradbury said in the statement.

Library to offer kids filmmaker program

THOUSAND OAKS Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  - ``Get It in the Can,'' a filmmaking program for those 13-18, will be presented by the Thousand Oaks Library from 7 to 9:30 p.m. July 13.

The program will include a brief history of film, hands-on exercises led by a film expert and former actor, and other activities.
