Boss given probation, fine for ignoring order

VENTURA - A Ventura liquor store owner has been sentenced to three years' probation and ordered to pay a $2,000 fine after pleading guilty to failing to deduct child support payments from an employee's wages.

Raymond Ramirez was charged with failing to deduct some $4,000 from wages paid to Richard Hernandez during a 12-month period ending April 1, but prosecutors said Ramirez had ignored three wage assignment orders for Hernandez since May 1993. Ramirez, 53, owns Avenue Liquor Store.

Ramirez pleaded guilty Thursday to seven counts of being in contempt of a court order to deduct child support payments. Commissioner Manuel Covarrubias suspended a sentence of 35 days in jail and 840 hours of community service and gave Ramirez the opportunity to complete probation and pay the fine.
