Ventura gets state emergency status

VENTURA - Gov. Pete Wilson For others named Pete Wilson, see .
Peter Barton Wilson (born August 23, 1933) is an American Republican politician from California. Wilson served as the thirty-sixth Governor of California (1991–1999), the culmination of more than three decades in the public arena that
proclaimed a state of emergency for the city of Ventura on Tuesday as a result of fires that began Oct. 25, threatening homes and structures throughout the area.

``By declaring a state of emergency, we will allow San Buenaventura to recover as quickly as possible from last month's firestorm,'' Wilson said. ``We will pave the way for the city to recoup some of the costs for fighting the fire.''

The fire began behind City Hall, and over three days burned through about 450 acres adjacent to the city.

No homes or structures were lost.

According to Mary Walsh, assistant to City Manager Donna Landeros, the city spent about $250,000 fighting the fires.

Wilson also asked that President Clinton add the city to the federal declaration of emergency that exists for Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties. A federal disaster declaration would allow the city to recover 75 percent of its emergency response and public assistance costs.

``Assemblyman Brooks Firestone (R-Santa Barbara) should be commended for his efforts in working with the city and the Office of Emergency Services emergency services Emergency care '…services …necessary to prevent death or serious impairment of health and, because of the danger to life or health, require the use of the most accessible hospital available and equipped to furnish those services'  to ensure that the state did everything possible for the residents of the area,'' Wilson said.
