CONEJO DISTRICT RENEWS SCHOOL BOND CAMPAIGN.

Byline: Sonia Giordani Daily News Staff Writer

Less than two months after failing to pass a $97 million bond, the Conejo Valley Unified School District Conejo Valley Unified School District or CVUSD is a school district in Ventura County. It serves Thousand Oaks, California and its subsections Newbury Park and Westlake Village.  will send a similar measure back to voters in April with a stronger sales pitch.

The bond failed to gain the required two-thirds majority in November, falling short by just 2.4 percentage points. Hoping to rally additional support, district officials said they rewrote the ballot proposal to include more precise language assuring that all funds would pay for badly needed school repairs and additional classrooms - not for employee salaries.

``The fact is that we have facilities that are more than 30 years old that need to be taken care of,'' said Dolores Dolores (or Delores) was a common given name (until the 1960s in the USA); it is cognate with the English word "dolorous" (meaning sorrowful) and equivalent in meaning.  Didio, newly elected school board president. ``We know there are major problems that need to be addressed and we hope to be able to work through them based on a priority list. But we need this bond.''

The five-member board Wednesday unanimously approved placing the measure on the April ballot.

The new bond would be limited to a 30-year period and cost residents an estimated $24.36 per $100,000 of assessed property value each year.

Approximately $60 million of the funds collected would be used for modernization and reconstruction, with an additional $10 million to $20 million anticipated in state matching funds Noun 1. matching funds - funds that will be supplied in an amount matching the funds available from other sources

Mortimer added, however, that the district is working to assess specific school needs and is scheduled to release a more detailed report of priority projects by early January for public review.

``There will be just as many people organized against this bond as there are for it,'' said Elaine McKearn, board member and mother of three children currently enrolled in district schools.

At Wednesday's board meeting, McKearn unsuccessfully proposed to mandate a citizens oversight committee.

``I think that with all that was going on in the last election with the City Council and the divisiveness and the questions of accountability, such a committee would have been a way to kind of mend fences within the community.''
