CONEJO DISTRICT, TEACHERS AT ODDS.

Byline: Sabrina Decker Staff Writer

A mediation session did not resolve contracts for Conejo Valley The Conejo Valley is a region spanning both Southeastern Ventura County and Northwest Los Angeles County in Southern California, United States. It was discovered in 1542 by Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, and eventually became part of the Rancho El Conejo land grant by  teachers this week, although three other nearby districts have recently reached agreements, district and union officials said.

Conejo Valley teachers are seeking a 2 percent pay raise and no increases for medical benefits, but so far the district hasn't offered them a pay hike.

The two sides are planning to meet again with the state-appointed mediator mediator n. a person who conducts mediation. A mediator is usually a lawyer, or retired judge, but can be a non-attorney specialist in the subject matter (like child custody) who tries to bring people and their disputes to early resolution through a conference.  May 22.

``No progress was made in the first mediation session,'' union representative Hal Vick said about the Thursday meeting.

However, the district said talks were moving ahead.

``It went just fine, there was a lot of information shared with the mediator,'' said Gary Mortimer Gary Mortimer (born 1967, Bristol, England)

Petitions and letters have been circulated by teachers in recent weeks, requesting that the district cut recently added programs and administrative positions to help fund a pay raise.

But Mortimer said the district has already made $3.65 million in cuts and budget transfers this year, and expects to make at least $2.64 million more next year.

``We should be able to pay our folks what they deserve, but we also should have enough to offer adequate programs for the children, and we're always dealing with that challenge,'' he said.

Both the Simi Valley and Moopark districts will cover hikes for medical benefits that would otherwise cost the teachers 2 percent of their annual salaries, Vick said.
